Science Vocabulary 1

1. Xenotransplantation - the process of grafting or transplanting organs or tissues between members of different species.

2. Pro-life - individuals or groups opposing abortion and euthanasia.

3. Germ-theory - some diseases are caused by microorganisms.

4. Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART) - are methods used to achieve pregnancy by artificial or partially artificial means. It is reproductive technology used primarily for infertility treatments, and is also known as fertility treatment.

5. Heliocentrism - the heliocentric model is a theory that places the Sun as the center of the universe, and the planets orbiting around it.

6. Geocentrism - is the belief that the sun, the planets and all the stars revolve around the Earth.

7. Carbon dating -  is a variety of radioactive dating which is applicable only to matter which was once living and presumed to be in equilibrium with the atmosphere, taking in carbon dioxide from the air for photosynthesis.

Cosmic ray protons blast nuclei in the upper atmosphere, producing neutrons which in turn bombard nitrogen, the major constituent of the atmosphere . This neutron bombardment produces the radioactive isotope carbon-14. The radioactive carbon-14 combines with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and is incorporated into the cycle of living things.

The carbon-14 forms at a rate which appears to be constant, so that by measuring the radioactive emissions from once-living matter and comparing its activity with the equilibrium level of living things, a measurement of the time elapsed can be made.

8. large hadron collider - is the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator which runs for 27km in a circular tunnel 100 metres beneath the Swiss/French border at Geneva. (For more information pls visit www.lhc.ac.uk).

9. Higgs Boson - an elementary particle in the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Also known as the god particle, it posits that this specific particle is what gave rise to matter.

10. Anthropogenic - environmental pollution originating in human activity.
