Cities: Words to Know

Amenities- These may be within the home, in which case they refer to baths, toilets (W.C.’s), hot water etc., or outside people's homes in which case they would include parks, shops, public transport provision, etc

Central Business Development - Central Business District or city centre; the commercial and business centre, a town or city where land values are at the highest.

Commuting - the process by which people living in one place, travel to another place to work.

Congestion - overcrowding on roads causing traffic jams.

Conurbation - a large urban settlement which is the result of towns and cities spreading out and merging.

Gentrification - a process by which run-down houses in an inner city or other neglected area are improved by better off (affluent) people who move there to have easier access to the jobs and services of the city centre.

Innovation - Doing something different with the aim of improving processes and outcomes.

Liveability - The general perceptions of the quality of life living in an area. It takes into consideration accessibility, safety, inclusion, local services and the environment.

Megalopolis - a continuous stretch of urban settlement which results from towns cities and conurbations merging together.

Peri-urban areas – those areas that immediately border an urban area, between the suburbs and the countryside.

Smart Technology - Digital networks, sensors and systems that support the delivery of smart services and assets.

Sustainability - The protection and maintenance of environmental resources.

Urbanisation - the social process whereby cities grow and societies become more urban.

Urban areas - areas that have a high population density and built-up features compared to the surrounding areas. The term can apply to industrial zones and related infrastructure as well as to cities and towns.

Urban development - the social, cultural, economic, and physical development of cities, and the underlying causes of these processes.

Urban growth - an increase in the absolute size of an urban population. This could be at the level of an individual settlement or a collection of settlements

Urban village - distinctive residential districts comprising a clustering of people with a common culture and forming an identifiable community.
