Glossary Immigration

Amnesty - an official pardon for people who are convicted of political offences.

Asylum - The protection granted by a state to someone who has left their home country as a political refugee

Citizenship - the position or status of being a citizen of a particular country.

Displacement - the action of moving something from its place or position.

Emigration - The process of leaving one country to take up permanent or semi-permanent residence in another country.

Humanitarian - concerned with or seeking to promote human welfare.

Immigration - the action of coming to live permanently in a foreign country.

Immigration Laws - refers to the national statutes, regulations, and legal precedents governing immigration into and deportation from a country.

Migrant - a person who moves from one place to another, especially in order to find work or better living conditions.

Multiculturalism - the presence of, or support for the presence of, several distinct cultural or ethnic groups within a society.

Refugee - a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster.

Remittances - Money earned or acquired by immigrants that is sent back to their country of origin. For some developing countries, remittances can form a sizeable chunk of their economy.

Repatriation - the return of someone to their own country.

Overpopulation - When an area is overpopulated, the level of resource consumption necessary to maintain the population will affect the capacity of the area to support future populations.

Undocumented - refers to individuals present in the country without authorization

Visa - Legal document verifying authorization by national authorities to cross its borders.  Visas confer many different statuses and right
