Internet Democracy

Internet Democracy: The Debate

Once thought to be a platform to bring people closer and empowering equality. Today, many believe that the internet has become a platform of identity theft, cyber-bullying, manipulative analytics, fake news, and authoritarian surveillance— hacking elections and polarizing open societies. The question then arises that will today’s internet technology kill democracy or reinvent it?

Internet is a tool that can be used to bring about massive changes in our society. People today are constantly connected through internet-enabled smartphones. Through social media platforms, people are trying to make their voices heard. We frequently miss the irony of hearing from minorities and the disenfranchised about the suppression of their voices or a lack of free expression, even as they freely espouse these views online for the world to see. Whether one is sounding the alarm or shining a light upon oppression, the internet has the power to advance the common good.

Consider this: Do you agree that freedom of speech should never be denied even though it can be abused?
