Many are in favour of cloning as they believe that people should be allowed to research cloning as it is in favour of FREEDOM OF SCIENCE and freedom of expression. Supporters of cloning point out that the ethics of society should be secular, not religious. However, freedom of science can take various views depending on the culture.
To prevent misuse of the cloning technology many governments have placed LAWS AND RESTRICTION on certain forms of cloning. In 2001 the UN General Assembly included a supplementary item entitled International convention against the reproductive cloning of human beings. The treaty was proposed by France and Germany, believed that cloning posed a threat to human dignity and thus, should be not practised in any form.
In 2005 the United Nations passed a nonbinding DECLARATION ON HUMAN CLONING that calls upon member states “to adopt all measures necessary to prohibit all forms of human cloning in as much as they are incompatible with human dignity and the protection of human life.” Many countries like United States, United Kingdom, India, Singapore, and several others have strict laws against human cloning. For example, in Singapore, the law against human reproductive cloning was passed in the year 2004, while allowing the practice of cloning human embryos for stem cell research purposes to continue.
With technological advancements, scientists and medical companies are more interested in standardized therapies. Today many technologies allow making personalised medicine without destroying eggs or embryos. CRISPR is another ALTERNATIVE TECHNOLOGY which can be used instead of cloning. However, the benefits of cloning cannot be dismissed completely. Cloning may be useful in the area for which it was developed that is to improve livestock breeding.
