Environment Vocabulary List 1

Acid Rain - rain which contains large amounts of harmful chemicals as a result of burning substances such as coal and oil.

Arid- land or climate that is extremely dry due to very low rainfall.

Biodiversity- The number and variety of plant and animal species that exist in a particular environmental area or in the world generally, or the problem of preserving and protecting this.

Carbon Footprint-A measure of the effect that human activities have on the climate.

Climate-Weather conditions generally present in an area or over a long period.

Climate Change- Climate change, often called 'global warming' refers to changes in the weather pattern.

Dead Zone-Area of water containing low levels of oxygen in which fish, plants and other aquatic life find it difficult to survive.

Ecosystem-All the living things in an area and the way they affect each other and the environment.

Environment-The air, water and land in or on which people, animals and plants live.

Habitat-The natural environment in which an animal or plant usually lives.

Sustainable- causing little or no damage to the environment and therefore able to continue for a long time.
