The following words appear in quiz 4.

1. ascetic - a person who undertakes severe self-discipline and abstention from all forms of indulgence, typically for religious reasons.

2. aesthete - can be defined as a worshipper of beauty or one who cultivates an unusually high sensitivity to beauty, as in art or nature.

3. ascesis - rigorous self-denial.

4. delinquent - a young offender.

5. dilettante - a person who claims an area of interest, such as the arts, without real commitment or knowledge.

6. dilapidated - having fallen into a state of disrepair or deterioration, as through neglect; broken-down and shabby.

7. bigamist - someone who marries one person while already legally married to another. (In most secular countries, bigamy is seen as legally unacceptable, as compared to adultery which has no legal implications.)

8. pragmatist - a practical approach to problems and affairs.

9. masochist - a person deriving sexual gratification from being physically or emotionally abused.

10. chauvinist - (the most accepted meaning is) a man whose behaviour and attitude toward women indicate a belief that they are innately inferior to men (but a chauvinist could also be a patriot).
